Golden Knights Shutout 5-0 in Pittsburgh, Stone Exits with Upper-Body Injury

March 2, 2026 By VGK Fan Zone Staff 3 min read

The Vegas Golden Knights lost 5-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 1, 2026. Pittsburgh scored four goals in the second period, including two power-play tallies from Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell. Mark Stone exited with an upper-body injury in the first period. Vegas generated 22 shots but failed to score for the first time this season.

How the Second Period Buried Vegas

The Golden Knights matched Pittsburgh's intensity through the first 10 minutes, generating action around the crease and maintaining neutral zone pressure. Ben Kindel broke the deadlock at 14:56 of the first period with a wrist shot assisted by Anthony Mantha, giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Vegas had opportunities to equalize but failed to convert on two scoring chances before the intermission.

The second period became a complete collapse. Egor Chinakhov extended Pittsburgh's lead to 2-0 at 5:47 with a wrist shot from Tommy Novak and Justin Brazeau. The Golden Knights' penalty kill disintegrated. Bryan Rust scored on the power play at 9:34, assisted by Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin, pushing the score to 3-0. Rickard Rakell added a second power-play goal at 15:06, again set up by Karlsson and Rust, making it 4-0. Vegas generated just six shots on goal in the second period while surrendering 10.

The third period offered no reprieve. Brazeau capped the scoring at 14:59 with an even-strength goal from Kindel and Kris Letang. Bruce Cassidy noted the team struggled to exit the defensive zone and failed to execute the next play through the neutral zone. Pittsburgh's forecheck suffocated Vegas transition game, forcing turnovers and limiting high-danger chances. The power play went 0-for-3, failing to generate sustained offensive zone time or quality looks at Arturs Silovs. Cassidy credited Pittsburgh's checking but acknowledged his team was not good enough in any area.

Key Players

Ben Kindel

1G 1A, first star — Kindel opened the scoring at 14:56 of the first period and assisted on Brazeau's third-period goal to seal the shutout.

Erik Karlsson

2A on power play, third star — Karlsson quarterbacked both Pittsburgh power-play goals in the second period to break the game open.

Arturs Silovs

22 saves, 1.000 SV%, second star — Silovs stopped all 22 Vegas shots to record the shutout and stymie the Golden Knights' offensive zone entries.

Cassidy Addresses Defensive Breakdown

Bruce Cassidy did not sugarcoat the performance. He pointed to five goals against as the primary concern, noting the team has surrendered too many goals recently and must score excessively to win games. Cassidy emphasized the difficulty getting out of the defensive zone and executing through the neutral zone to generate quality looks. He gave Pittsburgh credit for their checking structure but placed responsibility on his players for failing to execute at their typical level.

The coach singled out special teams as a decisive factor, noting both teams rank in the top 10 for power play and penalty kill, but Pittsburgh dominated in both areas. Cassidy contrasted the Washington loss, where Vegas played much better despite a quick five-minute stretch that saw the Capitals score multiple goals, with the Pittsburgh effort where the team was never competitive after the first 10 minutes. He expressed frustration with the team's road record in the Eastern time zone, specifically noting poor performances in Washington and an inability to win in Pittsburgh.

On Mark Stone's injury, Cassidy confirmed it is an upper-body issue and said Stone will travel to Buffalo, with a better update expected tomorrow. He acknowledged the timing of the injury and players' concern for Stone, who has dealt with injuries previously, but refused to use it as an excuse for the poor performance. Cassidy stated the team has handled absences all season, including a recent win without five regulars, and the players can handle it.

Vegas Holds Pacific Lead Despite Losing Streak

The Golden Knights remain atop the Pacific Division with 70 points through 60 games despite dropping their second consecutive contest. Vegas holds a three-point advantage over the second-place Anaheim Ducks, who have 67 points in 58 games.

The Edmonton Oilers sit third with 66 points in 61 contests, while the Seattle Kraken occupy fourth with 65 points in 59 games. The Los Angeles Kings trail in fifth place with 62 points in 59 games.

Vegas currently ranks fourth in the Western Conference and 12th overall in league standings.
