Mitch Marner Overtime Goal Sends Canada to Olympic Semifinals

February 18, 2026 By VGK Fan Zone Staff 3 min read

Mitch Marner just reminded the world why he is one of the most dangerous playmakers in hockey. With a spot in the Olympic semifinals on the line, Marner sliced through the Czechia defense and buried a backhand shot just 1:22 into overtime to secure a 4-3 victory for Team Canada. The win at Santaguilia Arena keeps Canada's gold medal dreams alive after a grueling quarterfinal that saw the team lose captain Sidney Crosby to a lower-body injury.

The Golden Connection

While the hockey world focuses on the Maple Leaf heritage, we see a different story in the Fortress. Marner, who joined the Vegas Golden Knights for the 2025-26 season, carried his high-octane NHL form onto the international ice. He has been one of Vegas's most consistent offensive contributors this season, with his playmaking ability a cornerstone of their attack. His chemistry with fellow Golden Knight Mark Stone remains a cornerstone for this Canadian squad.

The victory was a true test of depth. Shea Theodore saw his role expand significantly following an early tournament injury to Josh Morrissey. Theodore logged heavy minutes to stabilize a Canadian blueline that faced plenty of shots from an aggressive Czechia attack. Although Mark Stone had a rare neutral zone turnover that led to a Czech goal, his defensive presence in the final minutes of regulation helped force the extra period.

Key Players of the GAME

Mitch Marner (VGK)

Scored the overtime winner and has recorded 5 points in the tournament so far.

Lukas Dostal (CZE)

Turned aside 36 shots and nearly authored a massive upset against the top-seeded Canadians.

Canada now moves to the semifinals on Friday. With the potential loss of Crosby, the leadership burden shifts even further onto the shoulders of the Vegas contingent. If Marner continues to find the back of the net with this frequency, the Golden Knights might just be welcoming back a few gold medalists to the Strip next week.
