Smith and Marner Spark Comeback After Hart Injury

January 9, 2026 By VGK Fan Zone Staff 3 min read

It wasn’t the clinical start we’ve come to expect at T-Mobile Arena. For the first twenty minutes against Columbus, the Golden Knights looked stuck in neutral. The puck pursuit was non-existent, and the defensive corps struggled with gap control, leading to a quick 2-0 deficit.

The low point came at 08:24 of the first when a chaotic net-front scramble not only resulted in a Boone Jenner goal but saw Carter Hart exit with a leg injury. Akira Schmid was forced into cold action, and things looked bleak.

The Response

However, the "Golden Misfit" spirit hasn’t left this building. Despite Bruce Cassidy juggling the lines—slotting Mitch Marner on the second unit with Reilly Smith and Brandon Saad—the chemistry clicked.

  • First Period Life: Reilly Smith provided the much-needed response at 12:20 of the first, redirecting a shot to cut the lead to 2-1 and giving Vegas a pulse heading into the locker room.
  • The Surge: Smith stayed hot, netting his second of the night just five minutes into the second period to tie it. Marner’s vision was on full display here, picking up one of his two assists on the night.
  • Eichel Answers: After Marner briefly leaped ahead in the team scoring race, Jack Eichel reclaimed his crown with a vintage high-danger wrist shot at 13:07 to give Vegas their first lead.
  • Special Teams & Insurance: Mark Stone extended the lead to 4-2 on a clinical PPG, and after a late Columbus push, Brett Howden buried the dagger on a 2-on-1 rush with 3:40 remaining.

Knight of the Night

Reilly Smith

"Two goals and a relentless motor. He was the catalyst that dragged the team back into the fight."

While the win moves us to 19-11-12, the lethargic start and Hart’s injury status are the major talking points heading into the weekend.
