The Vegas Golden Knights extended their season-best winning streak to five games on Wednesday night, gutting out a 3-2 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings. Despite a sluggish opening frame where the Knights managed only six shots on goal, the "Fortress" mentality traveled well to Southern California. Head coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged the slow start, noting that while the Kings "started on time," Vegas eventually found their rhythm to neutralize early momentum and secure two crucial points in the Pacific Division race.
The Kings Ransom
Vegas came alive in the second period, dictated by a more aggressive puck pursuit and better gap control. Braeden Bowman opened the scoring, burying a beautiful feed from Jack Eichel and Shea Theodore to give Vegas the 1-0 lead. Cassidy praised Bowman’s tenacity after the game, highlighting his willingness to get to the front of the net. "He’s around the front of the net... he’s got good hands, got courage," Cassidy remarked, noting that despite a recent scoresheet drought, Bowman’s effort has remained consistent. The pressure didn't stop there; Mitch Marner - who has been an offensive engine since his high-profile arrival in the desert nearly doubled the lead but rang a heavy shot off the post. Despite a late-period push from the Kings that saw Eichel head to the box, the penalty kill stood tall to keep the lead intact heading into the final frame.
"It wasn't our cleanest start, but that's what leaders do—they find a way. Jack made an unbelievable play in OT, and it's always special to beat a division rival in their building."
The third period was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts. A failed clearing attempt and a "bit of a misread" in back-door coverage, as described by Cassidy - allowed the Kings to equalize mid-period. Mitch Marner responded on the power play with a wicked wrist shot to restore the 2-1 lead. However, with the Kings pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, Brandt Clarke managed to jam home a rebound with just 1:26 remaining to force overtime. Cassidy pointed to a tired group and a lost face-off as the catalyst for the late equalizer, an area he intends to tighten up. "Those are not games you want to let teams off the hook," he noted.
Yet, it only took 25 seconds of the extra frame for Mark Stone to seal the deal, tapping home a pinpoint pass from Eichel. Cassidy was floored by Eichel's "will" in the extra session, describing how he basically "killed their rush" before muscling his way to the back of the net to set up the winner.
Key Knights
Mark Stone (VGK)
The Captain delivered when it mattered most, showing elite positioning to bury the OT winner. Cassidy noted that Stone is one of the leaders who can help teammates like Marner navigate high-pressure returns to former cities.
Jack Eichel (VGK)
A masterclass in playmaking with three assists. Cassidy highlighted his ability to make everyone around him better, specifically pointing to his chemistry with Bowman.
Mitch Marner (VGK)
Scored a vital power-play goal and hit the iron. With a homecoming game against Toronto looming tomorrow, Cassidy advised Marner to just "play his game" and lean on the veterans in the room who have faced similar emotions.
Akira Schmid (VGK)
Solid in relief of the injured Adin Hill, Schmid made 21 saves. Cassidy called his performance "steady and solid," noting he made key saves early when the team wasn't at its best.
