Vegas Secures Bottom-Six Muscle at the 2026 Trade Deadline

March 8, 2026 By VGK Fan Zone Staff 5 min read

The 2026 NHL Trade Deadline has officially passed, and the Vegas Golden Knights have locked in their roster for a Pacific Division postseason push. General manager Kelly McCrimmon finalized the team's moves by acquiring defensive forwards Nic Dowd and Cole Smith. These targeted additions reinforce the bottom six, providing Vegas with the physical, checking-line depth required for a deep playoff run.

Trade Details: Vegas Acquires Nic Dowd

The Golden Knights acquired center Nic Dowd from the Washington Capitals. In return, Vegas sent goalie prospect Jesper Vikman, a 2029 second-round pick, and a 2027 third-round pick to Washington. Dowd is a dependable bottom-six center who brings faceoff reliability and defensive-zone structure — exactly the kind of depth piece Bruce Cassidy values heading into the playoffs.

Trade Details: Cole Smith Joins from Nashville

Vegas also added forward Cole Smith from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2028 third-round pick and AHL forward Cristoffer Sedoff. Smith is a physical presence who adds toughness to the Vegas lineup down the stretch and into the postseason.

Impact: What Dowd and Smith Bring to Vegas

Both Dowd and Smith bring a heavy, defensive-minded presence to the bottom six. Dowd is widely regarded as a premier shutdown center, excelling in defensive-zone starts and faceoffs. The 6-foot-3 Smith complements this with physical sandpaper, aggressive forechecking, and a high hit volume. Together, they give the Golden Knights a reliable penalty-killing boost and a grueling identity line built for playoff hockey.

Waivers and Mark Stone IR Update

To accommodate Dowd on the active roster, Mark Stone was placed on injured reserve. Separately, Alex Holtz and Cole Reinhardt were placed on waivers as the organization trimmed its depth chart following the deadline. Reinhardt was subsequently claimed off waivers by the Florida Panthers.

Looking Ahead: Summer Moves & Goalies

With the deadline passed, attention will eventually shift to the summer when trades resume. Vegas may look to aggressively address their goaltending depth in the offseason, seeking a long-term stabilizing presence in the crease to complement the newly reinforced forward group.
